May 22, 2010 The Star-Ledger; “Keys to musical success”
| |
“Nothing quite compared to [Jacques’] discovery about Rachmaninoff—not only did the concerto played get picked up by pop and rock stars … but the composer lived for a time in Locust, in Monmouth County. His quip about the piece being ‘Russian-New Jerseyan’ went over well, and the piece itself was met with enthusiastic applause. That would have been a fitting end to a satisfying concert, but a Piazzolla four-hands piece played as an encore by [soloists Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung] was an ideal bonus.”

MUSICIAN INSIGHT
Jonathan Spitz, Principal Cello |

It was great to work with Jacques in such an array of repertoire, to really feel his command of so many different classical styles. The most surprising part of the week, for me, was to find out that no one in the orchestra had played Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz in concert before—it somehow bypassed almost all of us. It’s an extremely challenging piece, and it was very gratifying to see Jacques put it together so effectively. As musicians, we are always happy to know another important piece of repertoire.
And it was great to see the season end with a standing ovation on a piano concerto. We knew we made our audience happy, and that’s very satisfying. |
