  COMPOSER INSIGHT

Bruce Adolphe, Composer

“I really did go back to [Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals] in the sense that I’ve seen it so many times, I’ve even written my own verses for it. I thought it was time to write another big orchestral piece that would be fun for children.

“The music in Carnival of the Creatures is full of imagery, and it’s colorful. It’s really fun to use the full orchestra to bring the shark or the unicorn to life, or to explore the teddy bear … why not be fun?”

  UPCOMING CONCERTS

PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION (NJSO FAMILY SERIES)
May 21
In this original pantomime puppet show, the world of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition creates a magical forest where a giant and twin tricksters create fun and conflict. Through his friendship with a white rabbit, a young boy enters this tumultuous world and teaches others the power of listening.

BEST OF SPANISH FLAIR (NJSO BEST OF ... SERIES)
March 17–20
This sizzling program reveals the soul of Iberia. Romantic selections from Bizet’s Carmen and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez offer a view from the Old World. Latin-American rhythms pulse through Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, Copland’s El Salón México and Falla’s Three-Cornered Hat.

A SALUTE TO JOHN WILLIAMS (NJSO POPS SERIES)
April 16 & 17
Oscar and Golden Globe winner John Williams has written the soundtracks for some of the most defining films of the last 50 years. It takes only a few notes to recognize the themes from Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Schindler’s List. Hear these and more, like Superman, Memoirs of a Geisha and The Cowboys, as we salute this incredible talent.

The April 17 performance is presented in collaboration with the State Theatre.
