MUSICIAN INSIGHT
Robert Wagner, bassoon
This was the first time in my career that I've ever played Scheherazade and The Firebird in one concert! I thought the audience reaction to the program was quite favorable. They were very engaged, and I think they heard the music very differently in the context [of a Best of … program]. The concert-hall experience is very different when the orchestra performs pieces that all highlight one theme.
The Griffes piece (The White Peacock) was certainly out of the ordinary. I think it has been about 40 years since I've played it, and the NJSO hasn't performed it during my tenure. It was a nice rediscovery.
