VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Reports to: President & CEO

  

SUMMARY

The VP of Marketing and External Affairs leads a team of eleven dedicated professionals in generating the NJSO’s ticket income (approximately $3.5 million in 2010-11). The Vice President is responsible for developing revenue goals and marketing strategies for meeting those goals; for implementing those strategies to assure attainment of the goals (leading and managing staff resources including the Ticket Office to assure effective and efficient marketing efforts); for nurturing customers from awareness, to trial, to commitment, to ownership (collaborating with Board members, musicians, and development colleagues in a patron-centered approach); and for cultivating NJSO’s overall image in the community.

  

The ideal candidate will be a creative, confident and enthusiastic marketing professional capable of leading and nurturing a sizeable team. The selected leader must be a seasoned communications professional and possess a fine marketing mind. Management, leadership, and relationship skills are critical for the emerging or experienced executive who will fill this role.

  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 
  • Provide energizing leadership to the department of Marketing and External Affairs, with direct supervisory responsibility for the following:  Director of Marketing & External Affairs, Director of Ticketing Services, Art Director, Marketing Manager, Ticketing Services Manager, Subscription Sales Manager, Advertising & Social Media Specialist, Single Ticket Lead, School Group Sales, and Communications & External Affairs Manager.
  • Develop and implement strategies for annual subscription acquisition and renewal campaigns and single-ticket sales, including the procurement of prospect lists, production of campaign collateral and advertising components, selection of telemarketing vendor, and all related budgeting and pricing strategies.
  • Elevate the NJSO brand with strategies including featuring not only the Music Director as the face of the brand but also consistently positioning the NJSO as a community asset.
  • Maintains ultimate responsibility for sales goals: Prepare annual marketing plan, budget, and timeline; conduct tracking and forecasting on actual and projected sales; provides to CEO timely reports and recommended adjustments as needed.
  • In collaboration with the President & CEO, manage a newly established Marketing Committee of the Board: recruit members, set meetings and agendas, provide regular reporting, and prepare Chair to make reports. Serve as liaison to full Board on all marketing-related issues and provide info as requested in a timely manner.
  • Maximize social media and guerilla marketing tactics to increase both sales and community exposure
  • Develop and direct communications and public affairs strategies NJSO-wide: serve as primary media contact; develop and execute media relations planning for both standard and breaking news; cultivate relationships with existing and new media contacts both in US and abroad; prepare President and CEO, Board Chair, and others to interact with media and serve as spokesperson as necessary
  • Work closely with colleagues in Development to further strategies that enhance the overallpatron experience
  • Oversee all box office operations and ensure consistent excellence in providing patron services
  • Serve as liaison with the Marketing Department of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center where the NJSO is in residence, as well as with the State Theatre in New Brunswick and the other halls throughout New Jersey where the NJSO performs on a regular basis.
  • In collaboration with Opera New Jersey’s Executive Director, develop and execute the marketing plan for Opera New Jersey’s summer and winter seasons.
  • Oversee all vendor-related contracts, including telemarketing, printing, advertising and media buys, and services related to the patron experience.

      

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 
  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, public relations, and sales campaign operations, preferably in the non-profit performing arts
  • Engaging and effective leader and manager who can nurture young talent and motivate and develop the NJSO marketing team
  • Solid marketing analytics and reporting skills, ability to manipulate and synthesize data to aid in strategy and deployment of resources
  • Strategic thinker who will be an asset to the leadership team and contribute to overall institutional advancement

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Reports to: Vice President of Development

SUMMARY

The Director of Development is part of a development team charged with raising approximately $9 million of the NJSO’s $13 million budget.  He or she will directly supervise the Manager of Individual Giving and Manager of Donor Database & Research, provide leadership to the activities of other major gifts officers in the Department, and manage or lead other initiatives and activities as determined by the Vice President. The ideal candidate will be a confident fundraiser who is comfortable cultivating and closing any gift, and an experienced manager who has overseen activities such as telefunding and direct mail and been part of a large campaign.  The Director of Development must demonstrate success in securing gifts of five and six figures, motivating and managing high-profile volunteers, conducting donor qualification, and working comfortably with individuals of significant net-worth.  He or she will contribute to strategies and long-range plans for departmental and organizational goals, perform essential financial duties such as budget development and monitoring, and contribute to the design and execution of the NJSO’s next major campaign.  Experience with patron services management or in a patron-focused environment will be helpful.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 
  • Assist the Vice President of Development with the management of departmental operations, including management of staff and deployment of personnel, budget development and tracking, progress reporting and cash flow reporting, and other duties as assigned
  • Directly supervise Manager of Individual Giving and Manager of Donor Database & Research, and provide general management of all individual giving activities
  • Maintain a portfolio of approximately 90 major gift donors and prospects and a robust calendar of cultivation calls, presentations, and other activities at all stages of the gift cycle (identification, cultivation, closure, and stewardship)
  • Provide guidance and oversight as needed to other major gifts officers on issues such as donor identification, stewardship, and moves management
  • Work closely with colleagues in Marketing to further understand NJSO patrons and contribute to strategies between Development and Marketing that maximize opportunities to enhance the patron experience
  • Aid the Vice President to prepare and conduct meetings of the Development Committee of the Board
  • Embrace and help to nurture the team-oriented dynamic of the NSJO staff, encouraging colleagues and volunteers to help with identifying and cultivating prospects and to play a role in communicating the NJSO mission and message to potential donors

MANAGER OF EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Reports to: Vice President of Education & Community Engagement

  

SUMMARY
The Manager of Education & Community Engagement has the primary responsibility for the artistic operations, marketing and sales of the REACH chamber music program. Additionally, this position is the primary “in-the-field” marketing and sales person for the Family Concert Series.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 
  • Manages, promotes and advances the NJSO's REACH program through duties including but not limited to the following:
    • Administers and manages all aspects of the REACH program's artistic operations
    • Plans and implements grassroots marketing campaigns to drive the sales of REACH programs
    • Attends and runs meetings of the REACH Task Force, providing appropriate information to support the Task Force's oversight of the REACH program.
    • Maintains library of chamber music which may include music editing
    • Collaborates on the development of new REACH programs
    • Plans and coordinates professional development offerings for musicians
    • Processes payroll for musicians
    • Manages client database
    • Assists with writing and preparing copy for print materials as well as direct mail pieces and online campaigns
    • Works with Art Director to develop flyers and other print materials in support of marketing strategies
    • Collaborates on the planning and implementation of program evaluation and assessment
    • Maintains program statistics
  • Supports the marketing and single ticket sales of the Family Concert Series
  • Collaborates on the artistic planning and operations of the NJSO Concerts for Young People and Family Concert Series
  • Other projects, as assigned

  

QUALIFICATIONS

 
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in music performance, music education, marketing and/or music therapy. Equivalent combination of education/training and experience also acceptable
  • Minimum 3 years' experience working in an arts organization or educational setting
  • Knowledge of chamber music repertoire a must!
  • Solid base of experience in artistic operations
  • Ability to think creatively about marketing and sales, turn problems into opportunities and interact positively with others in a team-oriented environment
  • Passion for making classical music accessible to new and diverse audiences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to flex public presentation style to reach diverse constituents
  • High level of organization and professionalism

SUMMARY

The Marketing Department of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly motivated intern to lend support to the Marketing Department in the areas of digital marketing, marketing strategy and department administrative support. Intern will participate in creating strategies and content for the NJSO’s website, email broadcast campaigns and a variety of other marketing campaigns and promotions. The intern may be required to perform basic administrative tasks such as data entry, perform basic analytical tasks and participate in grass roots marketing efforts. Other duties as assigned.

SUMMARY

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s Department of Communications & External Affairs has an opening for an intern during the summer of 2012. The intern will report to the Communications & External Affairs Manager and will assume various responsibilities while working on special projects for the department.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

     • researching media outlets—both statewide and national—to assess value to the NJSO and helping to initiate
         contact with potential reviewers, features writers and editors
     • submitting NJSO events for the 2010–11 season to online calendar listings and other arts calendars
     • examining past press coverage of the NJSO and creating filing system for hard copies of articles
     • implementing new system for storing and identifying photos from NJSO events and concerts
     • copyediting press releases, artist bios and other documents
     • generating copy—short feature stories and news blurbs—for weekly one-page internal newsletter
     • improving internal access to important information and photos by examining the office's shared network drive
         and consolidating and simplifying shared folders
     • exploring new media—eg. Internet, social media—possibilities and capabilities
     • completing other projects as assigned
