MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto
BRAHMS Symphony No. 1

Praised by The Washington Post for his “commanding technique, spontaneity and visionary breadth,” Vadim Gluzman will dazzle you with Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto. You will hear Brahms at his orchestral height in a work that captures the pent-up creativity of a composer who waited decades before attempting to write a symphony, haunted by the thought of following Beethoven’s revolutionary Ninth. In a work sometimes called “Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony,” Brahms continues the legacy of the composer whose shadow loomed large.

* Classical conversations with guest conductors begin one hour before the concert and are free to all ticket holders.

TÜÜR Symphony No. 4, “Magma”

   (North American Premiere)

ELGAR Enigma Variations

Written specifically for Evelyn Glennie, who The New York Times applauds as an artist with “immense musical gifts” and “scintillating presence,” Tüür’s powerful and fluid “Magma” will blow you away with its massive variety of percussion instruments including bongos, congas and even cowbells! Then, Elgar hints at a major underlying theme but never expressly reveals it—it’s a musical puzzle. Some think the theme is based on a popular tune, but one thing is certain—Elgar dedicated this piece to his “friends pictured within,” each variation being an affectionate portrayal of one of his close acquaintances.

Program Highlights
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5, Movement 1
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7, Movement 4
BEETHOVEN Violin Concerto, Movement 3

Beethoven’s story of personal triumph over tragedy still captivates us today. As he struggled with hearing loss and eventual deafness, his musical voice grew ever stronger and more influential. You’ll hear selections from several of his symphonies, including the “Eroica,” (originally dedicated to Napoleon) and his famous Fifth, which is best known for its distinctive four-note opening, often called “fate knocking at the door.” Additional selections from his piano and violin concertos, overtures and other symphonies create a picture of this musical genius.
